Location of the Gallipoli Failure
The purpose of the Gallipoli campaign was to gain control of the Dardanelles and Bosporus straits. They also planned to open a supply route to Russia along the Black Sea. Winston Churchill believed that they could force their way through the straits. When that operation failures, forces landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. However, they were in the wide open and were consistently held back by French forces. They were unable to gain access inland and were forced to retreat back into the straits. This location was bad because they had little to no cover and were consistently held back by the opposing forces. As a result of this, the operation was deemed a failure.
Location of D Day
D Day took place on the beaches of Normandy. The main invasion took place on Omaha Beach which led straight into France. Omaha beach crescent sloped so that enemies would not be able to see them as they came up the hill. This gave them and advantage by the element of surprise. The Germans and French would not be able to see them coming from the lower beaches. They would be able to have many soldiers up in the trenches while the Germans raced to get into positions. When they fought through, the allies would have easy access to France. The airborne infantry was given an even easier time because of inclement weather on the morning of the invasion. "73,000 Americans, 61,715 British and 21,400 Canadians" landed on the beaches and fought up the hill where the Germans were. The allies gained easy access to France and were able to liberate them by August of 1944. This location worked better than in Gallipoli because it allowed the allies easier access to France, and was easier for them to achieve their ultimate goal. They were able to deceive the Germans about their location and it was ultimately a success.
